MET recommending education institutions to insure students conditions to be able to participate at Work and Travel programs

The Ministry of Education and Youth (MET) is recommending the education institutions to organize the educational process so that the students involved in Work and Travel programs are able to take the summer examinations earlier, before leaving for USA.

After more consultations with the administration representatives of the education institutions, of the US Embassy in Moldova and representatives of the students’ and youth society they decided that the higher education institutions should organize the necessay conditions for the students to participate at Work and Travel programs in May 18 – September 13, 2008, according to a press communiqué of MET.

MET is requiring all the Work and Travel companies to insure the Moldovans quality services according to the international standards, the communiqué says.

Following some complaints of the students, the US Embassy has formerly decided they would not collaborate with nine Work and Travel companies, namely: Acord NGO, ASET, Association for Youth Collaboration (ACT), Center for Transparency and Democracy (CTD), Equity, Pro-Spiritus (YMCA), SEUC, Studitierra and World Travel. The interdiction is not permanent. The companies may submit visa requests the next year, on no conditions.

In 2007, about 20% of the visa detainees within Work and Travel program did not return from the United States, and about 42% of the students came back home long after the program has finished.
