Moldova to benefit from EU assistance to create community-level social services
The European Union (EU) will give Moldova a grant worth about 4.6 million euros to supplement funds for creating community-level social services. The assistance will be allocated through a project, Technical Assistance for the Commonwealth of Independent States-3 (TACIS-3), and is scheduled to start in November 2008.
Deputy Social protection, Family and Child Minister Lucia Gavrilita has told MOLDPRES that the assistance will be offered to implement a strategy in the field of developing social services in Moldova. Thus, alternative social services will be created in districts and villages. Gavrilita stressed that day centres for people in need of special care - persons with disabilities, elderly people, children and persons affected by social vices - are scheduled to be opened in the big settlements. The project will be implemented in partnership with the local public authorities, and will be backed with allocations from local budgets. The first secretary of the European Commission's Delegation in Moldova, Paolo Berizzi, has previously said that EU will give additional funds to restructure the Moldovan social assistance system, in the context of the implementation of the local public administration's reform. Berizzi said that the sharing of the responsibilities of the public money management's reform will reduce the expenses for the maintenance of some categories of people. Presently, over 104 community-level social institutions which provide services to more than 4,800 beneficiaries are working in Moldova. // Moldpres Publication date: 09 January 2008 Source: Archive
