Train, bus collide in India, 18 dead

An express train and a small school bus collided at a railroad crossing in India Friday, killing 18 people and injuring 14 others.

The incident occurred at a manually operated railroad crossing near a village in Moga district in northern Punjab state, the Press Trust of India reported.

The report quoted railway and police officials as saying the driver of the bus, who was in a hurry to reach his destination, forced open the railroad crossing but misjudged the distance of an approaching train due to heavy fog in the area.

Following the collision, the bus was dragged more than 60 feet by the train. The report said 16 of the victims, mostly students, were declared dead at the scene and two others died of injuries at a local hospital.
