California's attorney general says the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency needs to impose tough new limits on aircraft greenhouse gas emissions.

Petitions filed by California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New Mexico, Connecticut, the District of Columbia and New York City call for the EPA to start imposing tough limits on plane emissions within six months.

The federal government currently does not regulate greenhouse gas emissions from aircraft or any other vehicles, the San Francisco Chronicle said Wednesday.

The EPA says aircraft account for up to 12 percent of greenhouse gas emissions produced by the U.S. transportation sector. Scientists say that because planes travel miles above Earth's surface, they have a disproportionate impact on climate change, the newspaper said.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown accused the EPA of abdicating its responsibility in regulating greenhouse gas emissions.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
