A Bakersfield, Calif, high school science teacher has been charged with attempting to make methamphetamine, or speed, in a classroom.

The Bakersfield Police Department was given a tip that Jeff Scheidemantel, 32, had made attempts to import one of the chemicals needed to make the drug, KERO-TV, Bakersfield, reported Wednesday.

The chemical, red phosphorus is illegal to import, so police obtained warrants and searched his house and classroom at Shafter High School where police spokesman Greg Terry said officers found additional chemicals and determined the teacher had actually begun the manufacturing process.

Scheidemantel is free on bail and was put on paid administrative leave. He is charged with possession of precursor chemicals necessary for the production of meth and manufacturing meth.

Because of the evidence found in the classroom, an additional charge of child endangerment was filed, the report said. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
