Physicians, therapists, and dietitians at Saint Louis University Medical Center in Missouri suggest giving:

-- Active wear, pedometers, and active video games such as Dance Revolution, the Nintendo Wii and Guitar Hero to promote fitness.

-- Appetizer plates because they help with portion control for those wanting to lose weight.

-- Sudoku, crossword puzzles, chess and challenging literary classics help strengthen mental ability.

-- Eye pillows, meditation CDs or yoga lessons help anyone who needs a break from everyday stress.

-- A Mediterranean cookbook limits red meat and combines fresh vegetables, fruit, fish and olive oil in heart-healthy recipes.

-- An electronic toothbrush to a child because children like gadgets so they will brush longer.

-- Sunglasses to protect eyes from ultraviolet radiation, which can cause cataracts.
