Poland boy gets damages for medical error
A Polish court has ruled a 9-year-old boy will be paid $282,000 in damages for a medical error in a clinic that left him paralyzed five years ago.
The Appellate Court in the southern Polish town of Katowice has upheld the biggest amount of damages for a medical error in Poland, Polish Radio said Thursday. Originally, the Katowice district court pronounced the verdict in February. Piotrek Soszka, at the age of 4, underwent bladder surgery in the Child and Mother Institute in Katowice in 2002 when the medical staff put him on a wrong drip that poured a dangerous quantity of liquid into his spine, the radio said. The boy has been paralyzed from his chest downwards. Judge Lucyna Swiderska-Pilis said she knew no money can make up for Piotrek's sufferings, particularly due to the fact that the boy will depend on somebody's else care for the rest of his life. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International Publication date: 22 November 2007 Source: Archive
