The National Hurricane Center in Miami says the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina northward should be braced for the effects of Hurricane Noel.

In a 5 p.m. EDT advisory, the service said Noel was quickly becoming a "strong extratropical cyclone" -- a more usual weather system -- that would increase in size over the next 24 hours.

At 5 p.m., the center of the storm was about 450 miles west of Bermuda and about 320 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C.

Noel was moving toward the northeast at near 20 mph and was expected to speed up toward the north-northeast during the next 24 hours.

Maximum sustained winds were near 80 mph with hurricane winds extending outward up to 70 miles and tropical force winds up to 345 miles from the center of the storm.

New England was bracing for a drenching -- Noel was expected to produce 2 to 4 inches of rain, with isolate totals of 6 inches, across eastern New England.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
