Fatal crash closes I-95 in Connecticut

A pileup in Connecticut on that killed at least three people Friday closed Interstate 95 in both directions.

Four cars and two trucks were involved in the crash, which began when the driver of a northbound tanker truck lost control of his vehicle and crossed to the southbound side of the highway, The Day of New London reported. The highway, a major artery to and from Boston and Providence, R.I., was expected to be closed until some time Saturday.

Spilled fuel from the tanker threatened Latimer Brook, a tributary of the Niantic River. Hazmat teams -- including one from the Naval Submarine Base in Groton -- were able to contain much of the 9,000 gallons that spilled, but biologists said there could be long-term effects, especially on fish that migrate from the sea to freshwater spawning areas.

The driver of the tanker truck was killed. The truck was owned by Northeast Carriers LLC, based in Danielson, Conn.

The identities of the dead were not expected to be released until Saturday because families had to be notified, police said.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
