A waiter at the Portuguese restaurant where Madeleine McCann's parents ate says that the couple and their friends had the same routine every night.

He told The Daily Mail that the schedule might have made it easy for an abductor to pick the right moment to snatch the 4-year-old girl.

"When you think back now, because the routine was so set in stone every night, if somebody had been watching the group they would definitely have been able to work out what was going on and choose the right moment to take the child," the man, who did not want his name used, said.

Kate and Gerry McCann, both doctors in England, had left Madeleine sleeping in one room with her brother and sister, while they ate with their friends at a tapas bar that was within sight of their holiday apartment.

In the weeks after her disappearance, the McCanns said that Madeleine had been abducted by a sexual predator. More recently, Portuguese investigators said that the couple had become suspects. They appeared to be working on a theory that Kate McCann killed her daughter accidentally and then tried to cover it up.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
