Scientists in India said they concluded on their own that a tsunami last month posed no threat to land.

The team from the National Geophysical Research Institute claimed they reached their conclusion less than an hour after the Sept. 12 quake while the new Tsunami Early Warning System took more than two hours to come up with the same result.

Press Trust India said the magnitude 8.4 quake triggered tsunami warnings in southern India; however the wave instead moved into the open ocean rather than toward the coast. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
