At 99, she is Japan’s oldest geisha
Kokin Nee-san of Tokyo is only a year away from achieving her hope of giving a geisha performance on their 100th birthday.
As Japan’ oldest geisha, she observed her 99th birthday last week, more than 80 years of which have been spent as a geisha. She still plays the samisen and sings kouta songs at least once a week, reports the Mainichi Daily News. "I've gotta do my best for the customers," Kokin was quoted as saying, adding she hoped to give a performance on her 100th year. The report said Kokin was born in 1909, making her 99 under Japan’s old practice of counting the age as 1 at birth. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International Publication date: 07 October 2007 Source: Archive
