Co-workers get under skin more than family
Research suggests people are bothered more by the transgressions of co-workers and strangers than by those of family and friends, says a U.S. study.
Pier Massimo Forni of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and co-founder of the Civility Project conducted the research with David Stevens, Treva Stack and Stacey Lee of the University of Baltimore. "Maybe we are less rude towards family, or maybe we are more inclined to tolerate rude behavior when it comes from family," Forni said in a statement. The researchers find in a survey of several workplaces as well as employees and students at the University of Baltimore what they describe as the "Terrible 10" workplace behaviors: -- Discrimination in an employment situation. -- Erratic/aggressive driving that endangers others. -- Taking credit for someone else’s work. -- Treating service providers as inferiors. -- Jokes or remarks that mock another’s race/gender/age/disability/sexual preference or religion. -- Children who behave aggressively or who bully others. -- Littering including trash, spitting, pet waste. -- Misuse of handicapped privileges. -- Smoking in non-smoking places or smoking in front of non-smokers without asking. -- Using cell phones or text messaging in mid-conversation or during an appointment or meeting. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International Publication date: 06 October 2007 Source: Archive
