Two New Hampshire tax protesters who vowed never to be taken alive were arrested without incident to begin serving 63 months in a U.S. federal prison.

Ed and Elaine Brown, of Plainfield, ended their eight-month standoff Thursday, the Concord (N.H.) Monitor reported.

The Browns had remained holed up in their solar-powered home, where they repeatedly threatened violence against police and were supported by many visitors who shared their anti-tax sentiments, the Monitor reported.

The Browns were convicted in January and sentenced in absentia to 63 months in prison after a jury found the couple had conspired to hide nearly $2 million Elaine Brown earned during a decade as a dentist.

The couple, who defended themselves at their trial, described their standoff as a protest against an unjust government that lied to its citizens, the Monitor reported.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
