Hurricane Lorenzo killed at least four people after making landfall on the Gulf Coast of Mexico early Friday.

At least two of the dead were children, officials in Puebla told La Jornada.

Lorenzo was less violent than Hurricane Dean, which hit almost the same area in August and left 30 dead, The BBC reported. But it came ashore with 80 mph winds and dumped several inches of rain on the state of Veracruz.

Thousands of people were evacuated from their homes to shelters.

The storm weakened quickly as it moved inland. By late afternoon, maximum sustained winds were 25 mph and Lorenzo had been downgraded to a tropical depression, the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported.
