The U.S. Food and Drug Administration's chief medical officer, Dr. Janet Woodcock, has been honored by the Alliance for Aging Research.

Woodcock, the FDA's deputy commissioner, was named the AAR's "Indispensable Person of the Year for Health Research" for what was termed her "effective, innovative and ethical" leadership.

Woodcock also is chief of the FDA's Critical Path Initiative, which is designed to improve the scientific bases for developing, evaluating, and manufacturing FDA-regulated products. In addition, she serves as the point person for a team of FDA scientists and policymakers working on strategies to improve drug safety monitoring and the development pathway for treatments of disorders such as Alzheimer's disease that are associated with aging.

The alliance, which honored Woodcock at an awards banquet last month, is a non-profit organization that promotes scientific and medical aging-related research. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
