Prof. Paul Michelson: A New Historical Dictionary of MoldovaBy Paul E. Michelson, Huntington University (USA)* I count it a privilege to have been invited to comment on Andrei Brezianu and Vlad Spânu's new Historical Dictionary of Moldova. Unfortunately, circumstances did not allow me to be present physically [at the book presentation in Chisinau, Moldova's capital, on Sept. 17th, 2007], so I am pleased to be able to participate indirectly. The launching of such a significant, useful, and attractive work as the Brezianu/Spânu Historical Dictionary of Moldova is a noteworthy occasion indeed. First of all, it presents the English-reading public a trustworthy and comprehensive guide to the past and present of one of the least known of the areas formerly dominated by the Soviet Union. Secondly, this work is free of Russian national machinations and distortions. Thirdly, Brezianu and Spânu address the needs and interests of both the student of history and the student of contemporary events. The journalist, the teacher, the professor, and just interested individuals will find here most of the information that anyone could desire about the present day Republic of Moldova. The book begins with several useful maps and a detailed chronology of Moldovan history. This is followed by an introduction that provides historical, political, economic, and cultural context for the dictionary itself. This essential step is all too often ignored. The entries in the dictionary are comprehensive and concise. The style of the entries is excellent (take it from an inveterate "reader" and peruser of dictionaries, encyclopedias, and the life). It avoids both the dryness and the telegraphic approach that many similar works fall into. The system of cross-references is also well thought out and workable. Following the dictionary, there are three appendices giving legislature chairpersons, Presidents of Moldova, and Prime Ministers. For further study, the book includes a comprehensive bibliography of works about Moldova, beginning with a helpful bibliographical essay, followed by a topical listing of key works related to the subject matter of the dictionary. All in all, Brezianu and Spânu's book is a first rate piece of work that provides both information and a starting point for all manner of inquiries into the past, present, and future of Moldova. Well done and congratulations. ______ Paul E. Michelson is Distinguished Professor of History at Huntington University (Huntington, IN USA), where he has taught since 1974.
