Hurricane Lorenzo weakened to a tropical storm Friday as it moved over eastern Mexico with 65 mph winds.

Lorenzo was expected to diminish even further after roaring over the east-central coast of Mexico as a Category 1 Hurricane, the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported Friday.

At least 30 communities were evacuated and 60 shelters opened Thursday along the coast of Veracruz before roads began to flood, The Miami Herald reported.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Karen weakened Friday over the open Atlantic Ocean and was reported about 755 miles east of the Windward Islands with maximum winds of 45 mph, the Hurricane Center said.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
