Some colleges impressed by menial work
The tradition of the summer job may be becoming passe, but having a summer job may enhance college admission prospects for U.S. students.
Less than half of American teenagers ages 16 to 19 are working or looking for jobs, The Boston Globe reported Sunday. Instead, they take summer classes, volunteer or work more glamorous unpaid internships that look flashier on a resume than mopping floors or serving french fries. But because old-fashioned hard work is becoming harder to find, some college administrators -- even at elite schools -- say they value it more. Drudgery can teach skills like patience and discipline that make it look better on an application than, for example, community service that is clearly not sincere, the newspaper said. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International Publication date: 16 July 2007 Source: Archive
