Japan's Okinawa Island Friday braced for a large and powerful typhoon spawned in the Pacific Ocean, with torrential rains in the forecast.

The typhoon, named Man-yi, is the fourth for the season, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Kyodo news service reported part of the main island had already entered the storm zone by late Thursday.

At 3 a.m. Friday, Man-yi was about 100 miles south of Naha, traveling in a north-northwest direction at about 12 mph with wind speeds of up to 112 mph.

Kyodo said Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways had canceled more than 100 flights Friday, mostly those flying in and out of Naha airport in Okinawa. Seventy-four flights at Naha were canceled Thursday.
