New Yorkers are voicing amazement the city hasn't maintained the boardwalks at Coney Island and some are suing for injuries they've sustained on them.

The boardwalk reportedly has become riddled with wobbly planks, exposed nails and rotting wood in recent years, the New York Post reported Sunday.

"There are huge holes in the boardwalk that have been there for a year or more that have never been fixed," complained Brighton Beach resident Rochelle Katz.

Last September, the 60-year-old jogger tripped over a loose wooden board and fractured her left shoulder, blaming the city for the injury.

"It's astonishing how bad it is, and it's astonishing that they don't do anything to fix it," said Katz.

There were seven lawsuits filed in New York in 2005 and 2006 citing injuries on the boardwalk. The suits seek millions of dollars in damages.

"This is one of New York City's favorite treasures," said Todd Dobrin, the president of the Coney Island Friends of the Boardwalk. "How can you not revamp the whole thing?" // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
