Charity raffle ends in confusion

GILLETTE, Wyo., June 18 (UPI) -- Confusion at a charity raffle in Wyoming led to two people being selected as winners of a 2000 Porsche automobile.

The Council of Community Services in Gillette blamed human error, The Gillette News-Record reported.

It was poorly done on our part, CCS Executive Director Carma Harston said.

She plans to write the 340 people who bought $100 raffle tickets to explain what happened.

Harston told the newspaper that the person doing the drawing Friday night picked a ticket bearing the name of Linda Caylor of Moorcroft. But someone in the crowd yelled for a do-over, saying that the tickets should be shaken up more. The drawer followed those directions, put Caylor's ticket back with the others and selected one bearing the name of Jerry Tystad of Gillette.

The organization has been in touch with Tystad, who agrees that Caylor is the winner, Harston said.

Caylor was philosophical about the mix-up.

I don't win anything, she said. I usually just donate to things like that.

Sidewalks become a battleground in suburbs

NORTHBROOK, Ill., June 18 (UPI) -- Sidewalks have become a divisive issue in many U.S. towns and cities.

While sidewalk supporters say they give children safe places to walk, encourage adults as well as kids to exercise and bind communities together, others see sidewalks displacing flower beds and grass or call them a waste of money, USA Today reports.

Then there are residents who want sidewalks as long as they cross someone else's property.

Gene Marks, village president of Northbrook, Ill., an affluent suburb of Chicago, told the newspaper that residents for years demanded sidewalks. Then, when officials announced that the work was about to begin, the city got a total of 25 anti-sidewalk petitions.

We thought we'd give everybody sidewalks and everybody would be happy, he said.

In Northbrook, blocks where a majority of residents don't want sidewalks will remain side-walk free unless they are within half a mile of a school. Sidewalks will be required in all new developments.

Bare breasts get New York woman $29,000

NEW YORK, June 18 (UPI) -- A New York woman recently agreed to a $29,000 legal settlement with city officials regarding her decision to bare her breasts in public nearly two years ago.

The New York Post reported Sunday that due to a prior state appeals court ruling, 27-year-old Phoenix Feeley was given the settlement as part of her lawsuit for an August 2005 arrest for indecent exposure.

A New York appeals court ruled in 1992 that women should be legally allowed to bare their chests just as men are.

Feeley, who changed her name from Jill Coccaro, decided to bare her breasts during a 2005 art show and her nudity quickly led to her arrest.

While no charges were filed against her, Feeley did spend 12 hours in custody and was allegedly mistreated by police officers.

The legal settlement also marked the second time the change in state law has cost the city.

The Post said that in 2003, a model was given a $10,000 settlement to compensate for her arrest while wearing only a thong and body paint during a parade.

British group has employees 'chill-out'

LIVERPOOL, England, June 18 (UPI) -- A British building group recently opened a new office in the city of Liverpool that comes complete with a chill-out area for employees to relax in.

The new location for the Rok building group has a special area designed simply to meet its 70 employees' relaxation needs. The room has a video game console and a beer chiller, the Liverpool Echo reported Monday.

In addition to the chiller and a Nintendo Wii, the chill-out area offers a variety of newspapers and magazines for workers to read while lounging on comfortable couches.

Just in case employees don't care to read in their free time, their employers have generously added a dart board to keep their hand-eye coordination sharp.

The office and its luxurious chill-out room are part of the Rok group's expansion efforts since acquiring the KM Construction company, the Echo said.
