Anti-redhead thugs have made life hell for members of a British family who say they were forced to flee their home, living like outcasts and fugitives.

Kevin and Barbara Chapman of Newcastle-upon-Tyne say the alleged hair-color prejudice forced their family to vacate three homes in three years because of vandalism, vicious name-calling and physical attacks, The Times of London reported Saturday. The slogan Ginger Is Gay was painted on their home this week, they said.

The Times noted the Chapmans have nine children, with the youngest four still residing with them. Their 11-year-old son told them he contemplated killing himself and just last week the lad was assaulted by a girl and left with a black eye.

A Newcastle City Council spokesman suggested the family dye their carrot-colored locks, but the family took offense at the suggestion, saying they are proud of the way they look.

The Chapmans apparently aren't the only red-headed victims in Britain. Soccer player Dave Kitson of Reading claimed two years ago that fans who made fun of his red hair were as bad as racists.
