A British man has found an unusual solution for overcoming the lengthy road commute to his job, a quick morning of kite-surfing along the coast.

While David Grimes must wear his wetsuit as part of his unique travel method, the 37-year-old IT worker said kite-surfing saves him time and lets him avoid the daily grind of automobile travel, the Times of London reported Thursday.

It's so much better than sitting in traffic jams and breathing in petrol fumes, the Sussex county native said. This is good exercise and it's environmentally friendly.

Each work morning, Grimes said, he checks the winds to see if it's a kite-friendly day or if he must travel by bike instead.

I usually average about 20 mph, which is better than cars do along the coast road, he said. I kite surf most days and on those when the wind isn't strong enough I get my bike out and cycle.

But being reliant on the weather does have its disadvantages. The newspaper said prevailing winds typically force Grimes to endure a bus ride home with his kite in tow.
