Man cons Iraq vet, Silicon Valley arts

An Iraq war vet and the Silicon Valley, Calif., arts community were victims of an alleged conman convicted in California, Florida and North Carolina.

Larry Emilio Maschino, 39, is wanted by San Jose police on charges of grand theft. Maschino is accused of stealing $14,000 from a Purple Heart-decorated veteran and another $11,000 from two businessmen, the San Jose Mercury reported Thursday.

Maschino was paroled last November after serving time for fraud and grand theft in Santa Clara County. He then posed as a wealthy developer who promised the Silicon Valley Arts community nearly $6 million in donations, police said.

Maschino claimed to have inherited nearly $99 million from his dead father's estate, though his father, Lawrence Maschino, is alive and living in Florida.

He'd probably be a good salesman -- if he was honest, the elder Maschino said of his son.
