Earthquakes rattle JapanTokyo -- Several earthquakes shook parts of Japan Sunday. There were no immediate reports of injures or damage. Meteorological authorities issued no tsunami warnings. The strongest earth tremors struck in the morning in Chiba and Shizuoka provinces, neighbouring Tokyo, registering a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale, and a second that reached 5.1 on the northern island of Hokkaido. The quakes were focused about 50 kilometres below the seafloor. Overnight Saturday, a series of smaller quakes struck the Izu Islands, a Pacific archipelago south of Tokyo, according to media reports. Japan is one of the world's most earthquake-prone countries, rising out of the sea where Asian and Pacific tectonic plates collide. // © 2006 DPA Publication date: 31 December 2006 Source: Archive
