Teachers resume protests

About 3,000 education trade unionists from different districts of Moldova resumed protest in the square of the National Opera House on September 25. They protested against the Government’s decision to raise the salaries only of certain categories of budget-paid employees.

Ion Bulat, the president of the Science and Education Trade Union, has told REPORTER.MD that the Government Decision applies to only 30% of the teaching staff. Moreover, the trade unionists demanded that the salaries are increased by about 40% and not 18% as the Government decided.

According to Bulat, if the Government does not take new measures until October 5, the trade unions will mobilize all the trade unionists of the country in a genera protest rally.

At the same time, Minister of Economy and Trade Igor Dodon said in Parliament that 118,400 budget-paid employees out of the total number of 235,000 will receive higher salaries as from October 1. He also said that a new rise in salaries is planned for January 1, 2009.

Under a Government Decision made on September 24, the salaries of a number of categories of budget-paid employees will be increased by an average of 18% from October 1, 2008. Higher salaries will be paid to the employees whose monthly pay does not exceed 1,050 lei.
