UNDP Moldova helps hundreds of families get access to drinking water

About 110 families in Larga Noua village of Cahul district got access to drinking water as part of a community development project implemented within the framework of the Integrated Local Development Program/UNDP Moldova.

The villagers did not have access to the centralized drinking water supply system. As many as 105 residents helped extend the water pipeline by more than 2,500 meters and were paid by 1,000 lei on average for their work.

“Earlier, the tractor was bringing water in tanks once in 2-3 weeks. Now we have running water at faucets in the court. Soon we will make a bathroom in the house,” said Maria Bohcevan, a resident of Larga Noua.

The inhabitants of Larga Noua paid by 130 lei per cubic meter of water. Now they pay 7 lei per cubic meter. The villagers could use only the water from wells, but these are very deep and the water is not tasty.

UNDP Moldova and the Government of Romania offered a 150,000 lei grant to Larga Noua for the project, while the mayor’s office contributed materials worth 15% of the grant’s cost.

The Integrated Local Development Program/UNDP Moldova implements similar projects in Ghindesti (Floresti), Antonesti (Stefan Voda) and Parata (Dubasari).//REPORTER.MD
