New York's Grand Central Terminal has converted the waiting area bathrooms into women-only to cut back on lines for the ladies' facilities.

The station maintains men's restrooms elsewhere in the building, but the former men's room in the waiting area was converted into a second women's room after the City Council and mayor approved legislation in 2005 requiring a 2-to-1 ratio of women's restrooms to men's rooms at arenas, theaters and nightclubs, The New York Times reported Friday.

Officials at the terminal said long lines at the ladies' room have been a major problem for the hub in the past.

We've never had problems backing up in the men's room, said Frank Ozimek, a general station master. He said that by contrast, lines for the women's room had often reached far into the waiting room.

Officials said several women have already expressed gratitude for the extra facilities, while complaints from men who now have to go downstairs to visit the restroom have been few.
