New modern penitentiary will be built in Chisinau
A new penitentiary will be constructed in Chisinau in accordance with the European standards. The Parliament passed a bill on the construction of the prison in first reading on Thursday.
Under the bill, the jail will be built in Pruncul settlement by a private investor that will receive instead a plot of land on Bernardazzi St, where the penitentiary No. 13, which is to be relocated, is now situated. The new prison will have an accommodation capacity of 1,600 places. The penitentiary No.13 has the status of temporary detention isolator for persons under custody and is simultaneously a transit point for the detainees transferred from one prison to another. The building of the penitentiary does not meet the detention standards and must be reconstructed. The capacity of the prison is two times lower than necessary. The Opposition MPs inquired why the plot of land on which the penitentiary No. 13 is located is not auctioned so as to use the money to build the new prison. Deputy Minister of Justice Nicolae Esanu explained that this is not possible because the land can be sold for about 7 million euros, but the construction of the new jail will cost 30 million euros// Reporter.MD Publication date: 03 July 2008 Source: Archive
