New group of Peace Corps Volunteers starts work in Moldova
The U.S. Embassy has announced that another group of U.S. Peace Corps Volunteers has started its work in Moldova, after having been sworn in last week during a ceremony at the U.S. Ambassador’s Residence in Chisinau. This is the 22nd group of Peace Corps Volunteers that will operate in Moldova.
According to the U.S. Embassy, of the 28 Volunteers, 12 will serve as specialists for organizational and community development working in non-governmental organizations and local public administration offices. The remaining 16 will work with extension services centers and micro-finance institutions as specialists in agriculture and agribusiness development. The Volunteers will be working in villages and towns throughout Moldova for two years. On February 27, 2008 these 28 Americans began their 10-week Pre-Service Training, where they focused on learning Romanian and Russian, getting to know Moldovan culture and acquiring technical skills for their future placements. The trainees lived with host families in villages around the town of Orhei. The last Group of Peace Corps Volunteers, the 21st, came to Chisinau in September 2007. The first group arrived in Moldova in 1993. Over 500 volunteers have worked in Moldova since then. Peace Corps is a United States Volunteer Organization dedicated to grassroots development and economic growth in developing countries. It was officially created by the United States Congress in September 1961 under the leadership of President John F. Kennedy.//// Reporter.MD Publication date: 17 May 2008 Source: Archive
