Artificial lawn causes storm in Florida

A Florida jeweler got into hot water in Palm Beach, Fla., for installing an artificial lawn without a permit.

Christopher Kauffmann and his wife have appealed an order to remove the law, The Palm Beach Post reported.

Kauffmann's lawyer says that the couple spent $73,000 trying to grow a real lawn worthy of Palm Beach before giving up and investing $100,000 on an artificial one. The lawyer said that their property suffers from a number of handicaps, including too much shade and bad drainage.

Palm Beach officials said that the Kauffmanns could solve a lot of their problems by trimming their 20-foot hedges down to 10 feet. They said that if the artificial lawn stays the hedges must remain at their current height to shield the plastic grass from public view.

At least some council members seem to have thought the artificial lawn looked good, telling the newspaper it is beautiful and stunning.
