Court of Appeal of Balti accepted decision according to which Moldovan suspected of murdering Russian journalist Ilia Zimin was acquitted
The Court of Appeal of Balti accepted the decision of the first instance according to which the Moldovan suspected of murdering Russian journalist Ilia Zimin, former employee of the NTV Russian channel, was acquitted.
The instance declined, at the 2 April trial, the prosecutor’s appeal on the case, which was qualified as groundless, Velcev’s lawyer Victor Chilat has said to BASA-press. The Court of Bălţi accepted the decision taken by the Court of Ocniţa according to which Velcev was acquitted. Valeri Temirov Prosecutor did not give details yet over his attacking the decision at the Supreme Court of Justice. Igor Velcev that was acquitted by the first instance, on December 25, 2007, was satisfied with the decision of the Court of Appeal of Bălţi, saying once again he is not guilty. On June 22, 2006, Igor Velcev was arrested by the Moldovan police, near Cahul town. He was in general pursuit in Russia for murdering the Russian journalist from the NTV channel, Ilia Zimin, being accused of deliberate injures, as a result of which the victim died, and of extracting some goods from his house. Zimin was murdered in his own apartment on Academician Koroliov Street, from Moscow, on February 26, 2006.Velcev was suspected by the Moldovan authorities of illegal passing the Moldovan-Ukrainian frontier.
