Man arrested after money smells like pot

Police in Sturgeon Bay, Wis., said they have arrested a man after he visited a bank and deposited money that smelled of marijuana.

A Sturgeon Bay Police Department investigation found Tyler Meverden, 21, brought $4,000 in bundled bills that carried the distinctive odor of the plant to a bank March 18, The Door County (Wis.) Advocate reported Wednesday.

The police report said a teller who recognized the smell put the money into a plastic bag and contacted police. The bills were tested by police and the chemicals reacted positively for marijuana, the report said.

Meverden was arrested when he returned to the bank to make a withdrawal. Police said they discovered one pound of marijuana during a search of his home.

He stands accused of violating the terms of his probation after 2005 and 2006 convictions for possessing marijuana, possessing drug paraphernalia, bail jumping, obstructing police, battery and criminal damage to property.

The Door County district attorney's office said it is reviewing drug allegations made against the suspect by the police department.
