Four masked men vandalized a Swedish exhibit of work by the controversial U.S. photographer Andres Serrano, using an ax on some of his images.

After smashing most of the photographs with a crowbar and ax, the four left leaflets in the Kulturen Gallery in the southern university city of Lund that said, “Against decadence and for a healthier culture,” Sydsvenskan reported. The leaflets had no name or organization listed.

Serrano’s best-known image, “Piss Christ,” shows a crucifix propped in a jar containing urine. The 1987 image created a firestorm in the United States two decades ago.

"They ran in to the left, where the photos are hanging and it seemed like they had already been there and carried out reconnaissance," Daniel Hornwall, a witness to the attack, told the newspaper.

The gallery’s theme during 2007 has been sexuality, including the exhibit of Serrano’s “A History of Sex.”  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
