Tonnes of chemicals to be disposed from Transnistria

Waste

Over 150 tones of obsolete chemicals in Transnistria will be safely disposed from the ground. An agreement regarding this project was signed on Friday between the Moldovan Environment Ministry and the OSCE Mission to Moldova.

“Local people will benefit directly from this initiative – the removal of the pesticides will reduce risks to health and life of the population living in Transnistria,” the head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Jennifer Brush said. “At the same time, such co-operation on both banks of the river will promote sound environmental governance and help build confidence.”

According to an OSCE press release, the pesticides are both a threat to the health of people and also a financial burden of the authorities which have to take care of the storage spots.

The project to remove the chemicals came about as a result of both Moldovan and Transnistrian sides’ working group on agricultural and environmental issues. Moldova offered its co-operation in developing the project for the disposal of the pesticides.
