Threat of violence rising in New York City
An increase in assaults in New York City this year, along with the rising number of robberies in certain precincts, has city residents concerned.
New York City residents such as graphic designer Stacy Halloway are becoming increasingly concerned that the rising crime numbers represent the return of muggings and violent assaults to the metropolis' streets, the New York Post said Sunday.
"I remember I got mugged about twice a week when I lived in the East Village," Halloway said. "I feel pretty safe now. It'd be really bad for the city if people started getting mugged again."
While robberies across the city have decreased this year when compared to 2006, 18 of the city's 76 precincts have reported marked increases in such crimes.
When combined with the 15,095 felony assaults so far in 2007 across the city, a striking rise from last year's 15,027 total assaults, such concerns may be justified.
The Post reported one family was even robbed while visiting a cemetery and several celebrities also have been victims of the city's criminal element. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
