Thousands of grieved people bid farewell to Grigore Vieru

Poet Grigore Vieru was buried today in the afternoon at the Central Cemetery located on Armeneasca Street. Thousands of people attended the memorial service and accompanied him on his last road.

In the morning, the body of the bard was taken from the Saint Teodora of Sihla Church to the National Opera House. The square of the Opera House was too small to accommodate all the people that loved Grigore Vieru and his work and came to say goodbye to him.

After several hours, the procession headed for the Central Cemetery along Banulescu-Bodoni, Alexei Mateevici and Armeneasca streets. The road was strewn with flowers. At every intersection, the convoy stopped and a group of priests sang prayers. At the cemetery, the friends and relatives of the poet gave adieu speeches and said nice things about him.

The day of January 20 was a Day of National Mourning for the great poet. State flags have been flown at half mast in all the settlements of the country today.
