A hard-hearted Colorado thief stole a food bank truck while the driver was picking up donated pizzas.

The truck belonging to the Food Bank of the Rockies in Denver was recovered Monday about four hours later, The Rocky Mountain News reported. But about 1,500 pounds of food had to be thrown out because the thief apparently did not know how to work the refrigeration controls and $1,000 in damage had been done to the truck.

"The main thing is we got our truck back and nobody was hurt," said Kevin Seggelke, the food bank’s president and CEO.

The food bank has adopted new rules for its drivers to prevent similar incidents. The major one is that drivers must take the keys with them when they leave their vehicles, no matter how briefly.

The driver of the stolen truck had left the keys under the seat while he picked up 20 pizzas donated by a Pizza Hut restaurant. He found the truck missing when he returned to the parking space 5 minutes later. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
