The Village that Became Famous through Its People (VIDEO)

By Diana Ungureanu/ Chisinau/ Moldova.ORG/ -- Many villages on the territory of the Republic of Moldova are unknown for our countrymen, however, when you meet celebrities born in this village, the village becomes immediately famous.

This is the case of Ochiul Alb (White Eye), from Drochia County, which became famous due to Nicholas Testimiţeanu, who is native from this village.

Being at the head of the Ministry of health during Communist domination, he didn't lose the dignity of Bessarabian and knelt in front of the phenomenon of russification of the population. He also attended of his native village, contributing to the building in the village of a hospital and a school.

Ochiul Alb village is located in the North of the Republic, at a distance of 10 km from the Centre of the County and the railway and at 180 km from the capital of the Republic of Moldova, Chisinau. It is a great village, seated in the Valley of the same name, between Mihăileni and Nicoreni.
Legend of the village says that in the olden times, on the area of the village, there were some deep swamps, and their obscurity swallowed often lives of people and animals, so that the villagers have decided to cover the gulfs of death with sheep wool. The pools of water, above which could be seen white islets, have given the name of the locality.

According to the official data, the village was founded in 1850 and the first documentary mention of the settlement is made in 1750.

Another testimony to the history of the village are the mysterious crosses on the hill near the village, about is known almost nothing, where they are from, how they got there and who made them.
It is supposed that the territories, where today is located Ochiul Alb, were the lands of the Prince Mihail Sturza, and those more crosses of stone, in the absence of documents which would talk about them, are linked to his reign.
Crosses remain a mystery in history, as hidden of curious eyes of the people from the top of the hill and surrounded by impassible trees and bushes. May be they don't want to be discovered their mystery, who knows?

The village Ochiul Alb waits for wandered travelers to discover the mysteries, picturesque landscapes and the great soul of the locals.
