The New Seven Global Natural Wonders

By Diana Ungureanu/ Chisinau / Moldova.ORG/ -- A little time ago there ended the public voting for the appointment of seven global natural wonders of the world, attended by a total of 220 countries.

This contest was organized by film director Bernard Weber and Swiss New7Wonders Foundation in 2007 with 440 locations. The hundreds of locations have been reduced to only 28 by a jury headed by a former head of the UNESCO.

Both UNESCO and the United Nations Organization said they have no connection with this initiative, and have doubted the value of the results, because they considered that "list reflects only the opinions of those who have access to the Internet and not of the entire world".

With all this controversy and disputes, from the 28 finalists there were voted 7 natural wonders of the world, which are as follows:

1. Amazonian River and Forest. The Amazon rainforest has a total area of 5.5 million square kilometers. The Amazon represents over half of the remaining rainforests on Earth and constitutes the richest ecosystem in the world, with many still undiscovered and endemic species. If it is to imagine two lungs of the planet, then one of them is surely Amazonia, a paradise of biodiversity.

2. Halong Bay – the fascinating golf courses in Viet Nam. Off the coast of the Bay lies the thousand islands of different sizes and shapes, all constituting a multi-use ecosystem with a unique bio-diversity throughout the world, here are the elements typical of tropical oceanic and bio systems of the shore of the sea. The Bay stretches over a length of nearly 120 kilometers along the Vietnamese coast, totaling an area of approximately 1,553 square kilometers. The vast majority of islands located off the coast of the Bay are very small in size, not livable. The total number of islets which creates a dream view exceeds the limit of 3,000.

3. Iguacu Falls. The breakup of the Earth that appears in front of the Iguacu River on the border of Brazil with Argentina formed the most spectacular waterfall in the world, the Iguacu Falls. It is a much higher waterfall than Niagara Falls and twice wider, with a total of 275 waterfalls on nearly two miles on the Iguacu River. The best times to see Iguacu Falls in the months of spring and autumn. Air humidity in summer is very high and during winter these waterfalls are reducing in intensity, being smaller and less spectacular.

4. The island Jeju in South Korea. The island of Jeju in South Korea is known as the "little Hawaii" for the volcanic presence on the mount Hallasan, semitropical wonderful landscapes, numerous falls and specific vegetation of the island. Jeju is the only place in the world that took the "Triple Crown" by the UNESCO, being recognized by the global organization as a natural reservation (2002), a world natural heritage (2007) and a geologic park of the world (2010).

5. Komodo Island in Indonesia. Of all its spectacular islands, the tourists have chosen Komodo in the top 7 modern wonders of the world. On proper justice, Komodo is a rare natural beauty, with a mix of the tropical savana and an exotic paradise. It is a place where hikers are put in a cage while the animals are in freedom. Komodo is a National Park and it preserves Komodo Dragon as well as many marine species.

6. River Puerto Princesa. Is a river in the Philippines which flows entirely underground and pours output directly into the sea. It has a length of more than 8 kilometers of the crystalline water that sees the light of day only at the exit of the cave and at the overflowing in the sea, where it forms a splendid gulf.

7. Table Mountain. It is the mountain that hangs superbly over the capital of South Africa, Cape Town. It is a monolith of sandstone of about 3 kilometers in length, which was formed at the bottom of the sea about 300-400 million years ago. On this colossus opens a beautiful view towards Cape Town.

These natural wonders of the world are arranged in alphabetical order. Vote counting was completed, and the final ranking will be made public on the eve of the year 2012.
