The monastery of the Soul
By Diana Ungureanu/ Chisinau / Moldova.ORG/ -- I think that each of you have a monastery where you go every time with much sake. Today I want to introduce you the monastery of my soul – Lainici Monastery.
This place of worship is located in the heart and refuge of mountains, in Gorj County, Romania. Both the origins of the name and of the monastery aren’t known. From the etymological point of view, it is supposed that the name came from the Greek “laine” – that would mean “stone” or “pass between the stone mountains”.
The monastery age is lost in the mists of time, no one knowing its official and historical beginnings.
According to the tradition, St. Nicodemus would have built a wooden priory in Lainici. The church built there since XIV-XV century was destroyed on the order of the empress Maria Teresa. It is known surely about the existence of the monastery Lainici in the second half of XVII century and the beginning of the XVIII century, according to some documents that refer to the monastery.
In the monastery Lainici there was hided in monastic clothes Tudor Vladimirescu, because he was pursued by Turks. Because of this fact, the monastery was devastated by Turks in 1817.
During the Second World War, the monastery suffered once again because of the desecration by the German soldiers. In 1990 there was laid the cornerstone for the building of the new church on the monastery territory.
The monastery Lanici is a place of a deep spirituality, where you can find a consolation in the difficult moments of the life. On the territory of the monastery the time stops and ceases to flow.
The Jiu Valley, where is located the monastery, is of a stunning beauty. The monastery itself seems to be a beautiful white pearl at the mountains foothills, carefully arranged on a green cushion of forests.
