The district Orhei has not faced such a serious epidemic of mumps for 30 years
Daily, around 5-10 people diagnosed as having mumps are hospitalized in the district hospital from Orhei. The district has not confronted such a grave epidemic for more than 30 years, DECA-press Agency transmits.
Doctors say that 53 people were diagnosed with mumps only during last week. 70% of those 530 cases of mumps were registered in the villages Ciocalteni, Fiodoreuca, Mitoc and Morozeni.
The epidemic has extended over 47 locality form Orhei.
The administration of the hospital has decided to hospitalize the patients suffering from mumps in the sections of cardiology, therapy, etc. on the ground that there is no room in the section of infectious diseases for them. It happens that two patients share one bed. There are others who wait in the corridor for a bed.
The doctors tell that grown ups have already been infected with this virus. Such cases are recorded in the village Teleseu, where two teachers were contaminated by their pupils.
It is estimated that there have already been recorded four thousand cases of this disease in Moldova this year. Last year there were recorded 1700 cases.
Mumps is a viral infection which spreads through infected saliva. If you're not immune, you can contract mumps by breathing in saliva droplets of an infected person who has just sneezed or coughed. // DECA-Press
