Teachers could picket Government and demand higher pays early in September

The teachers could resume the pickets of the Government at the start of September to seek higher salaries as they are dissatisfied with the Government’s recent answer saying that there is no money to raise their pays.

Such a statement was made by the president of the Council of the Education and Science Trade Union Galina Talai at a conference of teachers in Chisinau on August 21.

Recently, the Government said that the problem of pay rises will be discussed later because the authorities’ top priority is now the alleviation of the consequences of floods.

According to Talai, a teacher with a length of service of 18 years receives a salary of 1,075 lei, while the minimum consumer basket is 1,391 lei. Yet, a university lecturer in the first year of work gets 785 lei, while the teachers in vocational schools 712 lei.

Talai said that more than 10,000 teachers work in the municipality of Chisinau at present. As many as 1,028 teachers abandoned work in education during the last five years.

Minister of Education and Youth Larisa Savga replied that the teachers should understand that the state of affairs in the country is difficult and teachers’ demands will be examined when the situation improves.//REPORTER.MD
