BEIJING, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A cartoon rabbit that pokes fun at the ups and downs of daily life in China has captured the imagination of the country's 137 million Internet users.

Known as Suicide Rabbit, this whimsical Everyman is providing a rare opportunity for China's young people to see someone poke fun at the small-scale venalities and social ills they encounter daily, The Washington Post reports.

One telling episode has the good little bunny scooting up with a fire extinguisher to put out a blaze. Unfortunately the rabbit was sold an extinguisher with chemicals that feed a fire instead of putting it out.

Viewers watch as the fire explodes, burning Suicide Rabbit to a crisp and leaving only his signature sunglasses intact.

The creation of cartoonist Liu Gang, Suicide Rabbit is gently illustrating the comical drawbacks of the society created by China's economic boom.

"I'm not interested in politics," says Liu. "I'm more interested in ordinary people's lives." // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
