Storms leave 60 Polish villages without power on New Year's Eve

Warsaw -- Powerful storms brought trees down onto electricity-supply lines in Poland Sunday, leaving the residents of 60 villages in the north-eastern Mazurian Lakes region in the dark on New Year's Eve, PAP news agency reported.

Employees from the power company said they would start working on restoring electricity supplies Sunday evening, but it was likely that many villages would have to see in the new year without electricity.

People living on remote farms could not expect to be reconnected to the power grid until after the new year. // © 2006 DPA
