Smugglers at the Moldovan-Romanian border
Romanian border guardians caught a Moldovan citizen at Galati checkpoint with smuggling cigarettes produced in the Republic of Moldova. The frontier officers withdrew the cigarettes and suppresed his car. The man was fined with 5,000 LEI and got his travel permit cancelled by the Romanian authorities, being banned from entering Romania.
Another man was caught by the Romanian frontier authorities carring cigarettes in the tank of his car. The Romanian citizen, who was travelling from Moldova to Romania through Costesti-Stanca checkpoint got a fine of 5,000 LEI. His car was taken away until he will pay the fine.
Every week, citizens of both Moldova and Romania are caught at the border with smuggling cigarettes, alcohol and other forbidden goods. The price on alcohol and tobacco is way lower in Moldova than in Romania, which is member of the European Union, and where prices are sometimes four times higher.
