Sightseeing in Romania: Salina Turda - Transylvania core
Chișinău / Moldova.ORG/ -- The Turda Salt Mine is one of the oldest salt mines in Romania, situated in the heart of Transylvania, about 40m deep.
Currently, the saline is an important tourist attraction in Romania, being refurbished to receive tourists.
The first extractions of salt from the mine were made during the Roman occupation of Dacia, but there are no documents to prove this, only relics found during excavations.
Only in the thirteenth century, the existence of Turda salt mines is certified in documents. In the XV century, massive extraction of salt from the mine began, as being one of the most important sources of salt in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The mine had gone through a period of decline from the late nineteenth century, as in 1932 it was permanently closed, due to its inefficiency. After 1950, the mine was opened publicly, as tourist attraction.
The mine was renovated and refurbished for tourists between 2008-2010 and the flow of tourists has increased significantly.
Presently, the saline has a modern entertainment base, that includes: a large wheel, a miniature golf field, bowling, sports field, an amphitheater, tennis tables, pool tables, boat ride on the salty underground lake and playground for children.
Vintage extracting salt machines, stored in an ideal state, can be seen besides the salt, so the mine is a true mining salt museum.
The saline is composed of several rooms and mines, such as the Rudolf Mine, the Gizela Mine, the Teresia Mine, Franz Josef Gallery.
You can also see and take photos of the large cascade of salt (the Teresia Mine).
Besides these special attractions, the salt is a true oasis of treatment with its microclimate and benefit factors in treating various inner diseases, especially problems of breathing.
As attractions, close to the Turda Salt Mine, we can list: the Turda Gorges, the Zoo, the Reformed Calvin Church, the tomb of Michael the Brave (Romanian: Mihai Viteazul).
We suggest you visiting the Turda Salt Mine as a way to combine utility with pleasure, that means treatment and sensorial enjoyment.
Distance between cities Turda, Romania and Chisinau, Moldova is 554km.
