Sightseeing in Moldova: Soroca - the walled city

Chișinău / Moldova.ORG/ -- Soroca is a town in the northeastern Moldova, located on the right bank of the Dniester River, 160 km from Chisinau.

The location is impressive due to its splendor places and its "symbol" - the Soroca Fortress, an architectural monument of historical and touristic significance.
The Soroca fortress is located in the center of the city and is the most important medieval building in Moldova, which has been preserved as it was built originally.
It was initially built of wood, in 1499, at Stephen the Great's order,and rebuilt in stone from the very foundation (1543-1546), during Petru Rares leadership.
The first documentary of Soroca was made on 12 July 1499, by the Royal Court in Harlau.

This fortress building was a necessity in terms of military defense at the eastern border against the Tatar hordes.
The Soroca Fortress is the only medieval history monument of the republic, which has been preserved intact, as it was designed by the medieval craftsmen.
Nowadays, the fortress hosts the City's History and Ethnography exhibition, which can be attended by tourists. Visitors can also visit the nineteenth century cave hermitage from the Bekir Pass.
Another guests eye-catching building is "The Candle of Gratitude", a monument inaugurated in 2007, about 30 m high.

It was built on a peak-rock and it reigns over the panorama that opens at the "Candle's" foot.
"The Candle of Gratitude" is a tribute to all the anonymous heroes who preserved the culture, language and history of Moldova in the polychrome palette of human civilization, in the memory of the anonymous poet - author of the "Mioritsa" ballad.
Another Soroca's attraction is the district of Gypsies, with their stately homes.
The Cosautsi monastery can also be visited, as it is situated close to Soroca.
