Sheriff defeated by Zenit, but it defeats Levadia
Moldova’s football champion the Sheriff football club from Tiraspol was defeated by the Zenit football club from St. Petersburg (1:3) in its first match at the XVI International Football Cup of the CIS and Baltic Countries.
However, in its second match it defeated Levadia from Estonia (3:0). The “Ashgabad MTTU” from Turkmenistan scored a victory over Zenit - 2:1.
All the four teams of the “A” group have currently three points each and the next round will be decisive for all of them. Two teams, which will continue participating in the tournament at the play-off stage will be determined on Tuesday. In order to pass to the play-off round Sheriff must defeat Ashgabad. The second participant in the quarter finale will be the winner in the match between Zenit and Levadia.
The semi-finale will take place on January 25, the finale – on January 27.
In 2007 Sheriff was defeated in the semi-finale of the International Football Cup of the CIS and Baltic Countries by Uzbekistan’s champion “Pahtakor” with a minimal score - 0:1 and lost the chance to achieve again its 2003 success, when it was the winner. // Infotag
